Archaeological Fieldwork

At Albion Archaeology, our capabilities range from tackling multiple sites on large development and infra-structure schemes through to small scale watching briefs. We have expertise in rural, urban contexts, designed landscapes and buildings archaeology.

Whatever your needs, we can work with you to tailor our services to your timescale and budget, and have sufficient expertise to accurately appraise the work.

Watching Briefs and Monitoring

Monitoring of groundworks is the service most commonly needed for small-scale work. Our highly experienced team can carry out watching briefs for any size of site, from half-day monitoring to supervision of work over a longer period of time.

Evaluation

We use a number of techniques to check for the presence of archaeology on a site and assess its significance; either to provide information required to determine the planning application or as part of a staged approach required to fulfil a planning condition.  We are able to undertake large-scale trenching evaluations quickly and effectively, producing reliable results.

Open Area Excavation

Where evaluation shows significant archaeology, we can carry out open area excavation rapidly and thoroughly in order to discharge an archaeological condition with minimal disruption to your scheme of works. Previous projects have included excavation in advance of the Bedford Southern and Western Bypasses and work prior to housing development within the Biddenham loop.

Other

Not all of our projects are a result of planning-related work – we also work on ecclesiastical projects requiring faculty permission, projects funded through the Heritage Lottery Fund, research projects and projects being run by various community and voluntary groups
